Medical cannabis therapy is used to alleviate chronic complaints and reduce long-lasting physical ailments and disorders. If you have been affected by physical limitations for more than three months, this is called a chronic condition. In this case, it may make sense for you to talk to our collaborating doctors and check whether cannabis therapy could possibly provide you with relief. We refer to shorter periods of symptoms as acute – in this case, cannabis therapy is not appropriate.

Only since 2017 has medical treatment with THC-containing medicinal cannabis been officially permitted – and its use is subject to prescription. The therapy is used as a supplement to conventional medical treatment or if this does not bring the hoped-for effect. Compared to the usual prescription drugs, the side effects of treatment with medical cannabis can be in some circumstances be lower. The aim of cannabinoid therapy is primarily to alleviate the respective course of the disease, as it is not a drug of first choice.

Is medical cannabis addictive?

The use of medicinal cannabis in the course of medically supervised therapy has so far not triggered cannabis dependence, provided that no contraindications existed.

How is medical cannabis dosed?

At the beginning of a cannabis therapy, ready-to-use medicines as well as cannabis flowers and extracts are dosed gradually. The amount of the initial dose depends on the THC content and is slowly increased. The maximum prescription amount is 100 g per 30 days.

How is medical cannabis administered?

Medical cannabis can be inhaled or taken orally. The intake depends, among other things, on whether the medicinal product is a finished product or a cannabis flower. While ready-to-use medicines such as Sativex and Canemes as well as cannabis extracts are taken orally, patients can inhale cannabis flowers via a vaporiser. Ingestion via smoking is not recommended due to the harmful substances. Furthermore, cannabis flowers can be taken as tea.

What are the costs for medical cannabis treatment appointments?

Due to the health care mandate, specialisation with a registered office is not possible. Therefore, only private medical treatment can be offered. The costs for private medical treatment with the doctors are always incurred per appointment with the doctor. For medical treatment with cannabis, costs of 90-140€ are incurred. Billing is done according to GOÄ standards. The costs may be reimbursed by private health insurance companies. Follow-up appointments take place every 4 weeks on average for ongoing treatment. There are no other hidden costs for ongoing care, so it is always transparent and plannable for you. From the 6th appointment onwards, the cost for the doctors decreases and reduced costs (<€100) are passed on to the patients.
