ADHD - or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - is a behavioral disorder that can occur in children, adolescents and adults. Even though ADHD was known for a long time as a typical children's disease, the disorder is widespread among adults and often affects those affected in their way of life. Depending on the age and character of the ADHD patient, the symptoms can vary in severity - but they are a burden in any case. The three typical symptoms include hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity.
The causes of ADHD are not yet completely clear. However, there are various conjectures that assume an interaction of different factors: Complications during pregnancy or birth, as well as external environmental factors that are responsible for a change in the neuronal control circuits.
In ADHD, there is an increased level of cortisol and a decreased level of dopamine, which trigger the typical ADHD symptoms. Medical cannabis can balance this imbalance by making it easier for the brain to transfer dopamine and serotonin. By additionally activating the adenosine receptors, it can reduce anxiety and increase the ability to concentrate.
Pharmaceutical ADHD medications such as Ritalin and Medkinet are often associated with limiting side effects, such as mood swings and personality changes. A possible alternative could be cannabinoid therapy under medical supervision. The cannabinoids THC and CBD contained in cannabis have sedative, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects, among others. The use of medical cannabis in ADHD patients may also lead to improvements in sleep quality, concentration, and impulsivity. [1,2]
